Gainesville, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would later become Gainesville were Circuit Rider Indians who arrived from Oklahoma in 1845. They built their log cabin on the banks of the Brazos River and named it Fort Clark after General George B. Travis, then Commandant of Fort Clark on the San Antonio River in Central Texas. In 1846, Captain James Fenton and his men discovered gold near modern-day Gainesville and decided to settle there permanently. They founded a post station on what is now Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard east of I-35W between 2nd Street and 4th Street in 1848 which they called Fort Fenton or simply Ganoeville (a Spanish word meaning "Gold Ford"). A Methodist church was built soon afterward and became known as First Baptist Church; other early churches included Second Baptist (1850), Third Presbyterian (1851), Fourth Presbyterian (1855) and American Baptist (1860). In 1861, when Confederate forces moved into East Texas to take over West Texas during the American Civil War, Ganoeville sided with the Union side and served as an ammunition depot for Union troops under Brigadier General Emory Pritchard's command until 1862 when he evacuated to Houston due to Confederate forces advancing on his position from Louisiana." In 1865 Ganoeville surrendered along with several other towns including Austin after Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army invaded southern Texas looking for cotton plantations that had been abandoned by their owners following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation." Aftermath : "Fort Fenton remained standing until it was destroyed by fire in 1924; today only its foundations remain." "Ganoeville proper lay within present day Austin County west of I-35W between 2nd Street and 4th Street; while much of eastern Gainesville was annexed by Austin shortly thereafter it retains most if not all its historic architecture." Gainesville, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Gainesville is famous for its annual Cotton Bowl Game which is held on Saturday night in Dallas, Texas and has been played since 1902. The first football game in Gainesville took place on November 12th, 1892 when the University of Texas at Austin defeated the Baylor Bears 10 to 6. In 1903, the school renamed itself Lamar University and then UT Arlington in 1942 before becoming UT Gainesville again in 2006. In 1930 it annexed parts of neighboring League City which had a population of 909 residents at that time and as a result became one of the most populous towns in Hudspeth County by 1990. The town was formed from what were two small villages: Sallisaw Creek and White Sands Ridge. Both villages were founded by Texans who came to this region during Reconstruction after the American Civil War (1865-1877). They arrived to find new land that was free from military occupation and many made their homes hereabouts beginning with General Sam Houston’s Texan Expedition into Mexico following his victory over Mexican forces at Aransas Pass on October 14th, 1836. Many soldiers and families settled around what would later become Gainesville including Captain John Witherspoon who married an early settler’s daughter there on October 24th 1847 while stationed at Fort Griffin along with his regiment under General Zachary Taylor during Mexico’s Revolution (1846-1848). Other early settlers include Captain Neely Fenton who built a log cabin on White Sands Ridge overlooking Sallisaw Creek about four miles south of present day Gainesville on December 11th 1830 just north of today’s university campus; he named it “Fenton Landing” after himself and his wife Lillie Fenton (née McNeely) who helped him build it soon after arriving hereabouts. In 1887 Drury Covington donated 6000 acres east of present day downtown Gainesville to be used as an Agricultural Experiment Station known as Centennial College where agricultural students could learn about farming methods from experienced farmers overnight using natural experiments done within their own gardens! The college closed its doors in 1906 but reopened as Southern Methodist University School of Veterinary Medicine & Health Sciences in 1948 before finally closing again due to lack of student enrollment in 1960 however classes continued until 1966 when SMU moved out permanently due to financial difficulties brought on by World War II belt tightening policies implemented by President Franklin D Roosevelt – also impacting other universities across America such as UT Austin which lost almost 60% or its budget for research between 1945-1949 despite having no military service connected to it! gainesville tx history
