The town was founded by John Gaines in 1836 on the east side of the San Antonio River. He named it after his home county, England, where he had been born two years earlier. The first post office was established in 1839, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1850, Gainesville had a population of just under 100 people; by 1900 it had grown to 1,500 people. In 1916, Gainesville became one of many towns incorporated within Austin when Austin annexed all of Comal County including Gainesville. The annexation led to a rapid growth for Gainesville as property values rose along with the city's access to transportation and education opportunities near downtown Austin. Gainesville is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,726 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Amarillo–Denton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Gainesville were two families from Arkansas who came to this area during the 1850s looking for new land to homestead and prospect for oil. In 1857, John Bridgwater and his family arrived from England and began trading goods with the Indian tribes living around here before settling down on land adjoining their farmstead in 1859. They named their farmstead "Gainesville" after General James Kenedy's cavalry unit which had been stationed nearby at Fort Worth during the Mexican-American War. The Bridgwater family would remain landowners here until 1903 when they sold their holdings to J.B. Hinton and others who name changed it to "Hinton." The early days of aviation were not without controversy in this area as pilots attempted to fly over Gainesville on short notice or while under strict military regulations that forbid all flights within one mile (1 kilometer) of any post office or other public building! A few brave souls made somebia flights between Hereford Airport on the east side of town and Edwards Air Force Base on the west side but these efforts quickly resulted in high wind speeds and costly repairs necessary for airports just then being built across country! In 1954, construction commenced on a brand new airport north of Gainesville by developers Harry Daugherty and Wanda Ladd who purchased 320 acres (128 hectares) including present day downtown Gainesville from John Bridgwater & Sons Incorporated. The new airport was designed by famed American architect Ivar Næss with its three runways providing easy access even for small planes; it opened July 24, 1954! Today visitors can enjoy views of Kingfisher Bay from many arrival/ departure gates located adjacent to Loop 610 loop near downtown Gainesville – making it easily accessible even for those without cars! Today, there are several interesting museums located throughout Downtown Gainesville such as: The Rita Houston Museum of Art (); The First Baptist Church Museum (); and The Gadsden Confederate Monument Museum (). There are also numerous restaurants located throughout downtown such as: Checkers restaurant (), Tim Horton's (), Alamo Drafthouse (), Longhorn Steakhouse (), Joe's Pizza () and more!.
