The first coffee shop in Gainesville, Texas was the Coffee House on Elm Street. It was opened in 1912 by Harry and Charles Fenton. The business continued to be operated until the early 1960s when it was bought by Harry Howey. In the early 1960s, Howey started a small grocery store next door called The Grocery. He also purchased the building that housed the Coffee House and began operating it as his own coffee shop. From there, Howey ran the business until he sold it to Bob Smith in 1984. In 1996, Bob Smith decided to close his business due to poor sales and moved it to his home where he still operates it today.

Gainesville is a town in Eldorado County, Texas, United States. The population was 924 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is the county seat of Eldorado County. The first European to visit what is now Gainesville was Father Antonio de la Vega on May 7, 1763. He named it "El Dorado" because he found gold there. There were no permanent residents until 1836 when General Sam Houston established Fort Worth as the new capital of Texas and named Gainesville its primary center for government and commercial activities. The town's growth accelerated due to its location on the Santa Fe Trail, which connected San Antonio with Austin and Mexico City. In 1859, Baylor University was founded in Gainesville by Methodist ministers under the name Baylor College of Medicine; this led to the town becoming one of leading medical centers in Texas. During World War II, many people from Gainesville enlisted in military service and support roles including work at D-Day beaches June 6-8 1944 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear; these individuals are often referred to as "Gainville Millionaires."
