The river fortuitously named Fort Worth followed Fisk’s advice and became a commercial center with tollbooths along both rivers. The City Council rapidly grew during the late 1800s as businesses mushroomed around downtown Frisco. A streetcar system connected downtown with nearby suburbs by 1903, making Frisco one of the first cities to provide public transportation within its borders. Many University of Texas students moved to Frisco during this time; enrollment peaked at more than 20 percent of Dallas’ total undergraduate enrollment by 1920 thanks to strong local access to education resources and cheap rent prices. Today, many businesses have relocated out of downtown due to changing demographics or cost factors related to suburban development west of Interstate 30 (I-30). At that time too, Frisco became known as “the Cotton Capital of America” due to its large cotton industry which thrived until World War II when production peaked and came to a halt due to bombing raids targetting industrial sites throughout Japan. In 1951-1952, Frisco experienced one of its largest economic expansions yet when oil exploration began near the city limits; this led to increased development around downtown which included new hotels, restaurants and retail outlets along with new housing developments such as Regency Towers and Lakeshore Park Plaza/Regency Center West Tower apartments tower complex built adjacent Dallas County Courthouse building across Trinity River from main campus downtown on now Richardson Road/New Beginnings Boulevard off I-635 southbound exit ramps southbound going east on I-635 then turning west on New Beginnings Boulevard past Waco Hallmarks before turning north onto Elm Street past current Lamar High School before reaching MainStreet today where many continue shopping at Jacksons Landing located just east along old US Highway 80 corridor now Erwin Road close Interstate 10 access road with Walmart Supercenter (now Sams Club) just northeast corner
