With its rich history dating back to 1849 when General Sam Houston founded San Antonio de Bexar on the current site of downtown Frisco, Frisco is considered one of America's "old cities". The city was named for General Sam Houston because he was initially buried there with his army following their victory over Mexican forces at San Jacinto in 1836. The downtown district that includes most of downtown Frisco was first settled by Cowboys from central Texas in the 1840s as ranching areas grew around the Missionaries Road oilfield near present-day Ballpark Village. By 1860, about 60% of all residents were residents who lived within 10 miles (16 km) or less of Fort Worth proper - including all but two settlements in Dallas County - making it one of the most urbanized regions in Texas at that time. At this point cotton farming became an important industry as did cattleraising; however oil discoveries began to make Frisco a center for petroleum production beginning in 1923 when Shell Oil Company drilled several wells adjacent to Pioneer Elementary School on Main Street which would become known as "the well house" due to its prominent location on topof what was then Camp Bowie Hills State Park after they leased land from Baylor College (now Baylor University). In 1930 Wichita Falls established itself as an independent city with a population larger than that enjoyed by eitherFort Worth orDallas; however Wichita Falls never reached such heights as Dallas until after World War II when many people left for military service and construction came along with it creating some very dense populations where streets now lead nowhere; today only some original buildings remain from Wichita Falls days while mostfwitnesses assume development took place on both sides OF I-30
