This increase in deployments was due to several factors: new battlefield technologies including jet aircraft; increasing American support for allies during World War II; and deteriorating Soviet morale following Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender in 1945. A total of 54 different types of gift helicopters have been deployed by USAF since 1941; these include transports (such as Douglas DC-3), trainers (such as Bellanca UC-4), search and rescue (SAR) helicopters (Bell 407/412/415), firefighting assets (De Havilland TFH 481/482/483), VIP transport platforms (Piper PA-8 Poseidon), humanitarian assistance vehicles (CH-46 Sea Knight) and combat testing platforms for evaluation purposes only or demonstration flights only – all designed to provide airlift services within NATO airspace or add value to USAAF operational concepts or doctrine.
