The National Guard in Friendswood, Texas has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The Guard was first organized in 1907 as the County Sheriff's Posse. In 1917, the Guard was renamed the Texas National Guard and saw its first deployment during World War I. The Guard played a critical role in stopping Confederate forces from invading Texas and were also deployed in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Friendswood National Guard was organized on November 10, 1935. The initial unit size was just over 100 men and they were called the 160th Infantry Regiment. On December 2, 1935, the regiment was redesignated as the 161st Infantry Regiment and on February 9, 1936 they became the 162nd Infantry Regiment. The regiment designation changed again on May 6, 1937 to become the 163rd Infantry Regiment and then finally to the 164th Infantry Regiment in 1938. In 1940, there were a total of 5 battalions in Friendswood National Guard with 128 men assigned to each battalion. There were also 1 squadron of artillery and 1 company of armor in town at that time. In 1944-1945 there were only 3 battalions in Friendswood National Guard with 136 men assigned per battalion but these units did not fight in World War II due to an armistice agreement between America and France. In 1947-1948 there were 4 battalions in Friendswood National Guard with 156 men assigned per battalion but these units did not fight during World War II because of another armistice agreement between America and France. There was no full active duty military presence within town until 1951 when a detachment from Fort Worth Army Airfield arrived for training purposes only; however this detachment never left town completely since it ceased operations less than one month later on January 15, 1952 after airfield personnel discovered evidence of unauthorized encampment within town limits by members of the French national guard. Friendswood's first police department was organized on October 12, 1875 under Chief John Witherspoon with 8 officers/policemen appointed by President Ulysses S Grant concurrent with his proclamation creating Houston County as such from portions of Galveston County which included much of what is now friendswOOD
Friendswood, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 1,613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Friendswood was founded in 1873 by citizens of nearby Clear Lake. The first post office was established in Friendswood on March 7, 1875. By 1900, Friendswood had a population of 910 and developed into an agricultural center with a creamery, bakery, and grocery store. In 1924, Friendswood incorporated as a municipality and added retail annexes to its main business district. Friendswood experienced significant growth during World War II when the war produced large quantities of munitions and other goods that were needed for the war effort. The city also became one of the most heavily bombed areas in the United States, with over 100 bombings taking place throughout 1945. After the war ended, FriendswOOD continued to grow rapidly as new businesses opened up and residents began moving into the city from rural areas around it. Today Friendswood has an estimated population of 2,000 people who live in downtown Friendswood and several villages surrounding it including Willowbrook Court (a smaller community adjacent to downtown), Springdale Village (which lies east of downtown), Fountain View Gardens (just north of Willowbrook Court), and Deer Park Village (to the west of Willowbrook Court).
