The Friendswood Air Force Base Museum has a rich history of air force gift giving. From WWII through the present, Friendswood AFB has been home to the USAF's 407th Airlift Wing, which is responsible for providinglift services for military and civilian populations in Texas and New Mexico. In 1951, when the 405th Airlift Wing was established at Friendswood AFB, it was the first USAF unit to be stationed on base. The wing served as a mobile reserve support unit until its activation as an operational flying squadron in 1966. The wing continued to fly alert missions until its retirement in 1991. Friendswood AFB also played host to two other USAF units during the early days of air transportation: The 915th Troop Carrier Squadron (later redesignated as the 915th Logistics Wing) arrived in 1964 and served as an inter-aircraft maintenance squadron; and The 335 th Airlift Squadron (later redesignated as the 335 th Airlift Group), which arrived from RAF Mildenhall RAF Station Norfolk in 1965 and providedlift service for troops throughout Southwest Asia.
