It is located on the Gulf of Mexico, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Corpus Christi, and 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Houston. The history of Freeport began with Father José Gomez who founded the first Catholic mission in what is now Freeport on November 16, 1821. He named it after his friend Fray Francisco de Paula Gomez y Alvarado who had been killed during an expedition against Spanish territory in 1795 near modern-day San Antonio de Bexar County. In 1823, Father Gomez's brother Pedro Garcia granted land to Fray José for a church and school which would eventually become known as Our Lady of Loreto School Annexe Bethel Church and Parish Hall complex; today's Freeport Municipal Airport was dedicated by Mayor Vicente Martinez on October 5, 1945 as "Fray Jose Gomez Memorial Airport". In 1942, when World War II began there were only 350 people living in Freeport but by 1945 it had increased to 1,500 due to military personnel stationed at nearby San Antonio Air Force Base and other related installations. The post-war boom continued through the 1950s with many new businesses being created such as shipbuilding companies and agriculture Processing plants; however it ended abruptly in the early 1960s when oil prices plummeted due to OPEC production cuts announced by America's then president John F Kennedy following the Cuban Missile Crisis. Freeport, Texas is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,291 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The original town site was on the west bank of the Rio Grande near present-day Freeport and Escondido. In 1876, J.C. Loving platted what became Freeport on an area that included present-day downtown and all of westernJohnson County. The first post office opened in 1877 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The city's name comes from "Freetown" (now Liberia), which was a British trading post located on the east bank of the Rio Grande about 25 miles south of Freeport when it was founded in 1876 by John Covington Loving and his brother James A. Loving with help from their father, General Sam Houston II.: "Freetown" means "free land." When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, American citizens were motivated to keep British subjects under control by proclaiming themselves "freemen." Accordingly, Freeport became known as " FREETOWN ," and continued to be so until 1978 when it changed its name to Johnson County after former Ulysses S. The original town site straddled both banks of the river where today's downtown Freeport sits on land that once served as a wagon ferry landing for goods moving upriver between Juárez and Monterrey City during the early 1800s; prior to this point water transportation itineraries involved wagons crossing either side of I-10 near Brownsville or traveling downriver through Lubbock before reaching Monterrey City or Texarkana along I-40 just north of present day Austin (the latter route being used starting around 1847).
