After World War I Freeport hosted a large military base used for storage and recruitment during World War II before being closed down in 1945. In 1967 Freeport annexed the neighboring unincorporated community of Weimar to form a new city called Weimar-Freeport which had a combined population of 10,000 people. The annexation caused some tension between Freeport residents and Weimar residents over development rights for what were then considered low-income areas within Freeport limits. In 2007 Hurricane Ike destroyed much of downtown Freeport and many businesses so efforts have been made to rebuild including creating a city park that is now home to several soccer teams as well as art galleries and restaurants
