The Freeport Coast Guard Station has been in operation since 1938. The original station was built on the current site of the present station. The first coast guard officer at Freeport was Captain John A. Dickey. In 1951, the station received its own boat, the "Sweeney". In 1979, a new coast guard tower was built and in 1994, a new harbor access dock was added to the station. In 2006, a new command center and office were also constructed on premises. On September 25, 2018, it was announced that Freeport would be retiring its last Coast Guard boat - the "John F Kennedy" - effective December 15th.

The community has since recovered greatly - especially due to support programs such as FEMA’s Rebuilding Now! program which provides cash assistance based on need – with new stores, restaurants, hotels, churches and other businesses opening up quickly across town since 2007. In early 2017 plans were announced for a $1 billion project called Pearl Harbor Boulevard/IH35 Corridor Project which will connect downtown withPearl Harbor Boulevard south through Marina del Rey and then east along IH 35 into Freeport
