Fredericksburg is a small town in the Panhandle of Texas, located on the border of Cameron and Tyler Counties. The population was 3,848 at the 2000 census. It lies on TX-27, about six miles east of junction with US-281. The origins of Fredericksburg date back to 1836 when General Robert E. Lee decided to move his army from Lexington, Kentucky to Fort Worth, Texas in order to join Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna in their attempt to overthrow Mexican President Agustín de Santa Anna. The movement passed through Scotsman John Gregg's ranch on what is now FM 2222 and took up temporary quarters at Greenwood House before settling permanently at Taylor's Mills Landing on the Brazos River in 1837. In 1839, an agreement was made between General Sam Houston and Mexico that designated Houston’s home state of Travis County as part of Mexico City so that Texans living there could not vote unless they resigned themselves to Mexican rule or were born within its borders. A group of twenty men known as “The Forty-Eighters” decided to stay put and fight for their rights despite threats from American forces led by General Andrew Jackson which had surrounded Austin and were threatening Tx-27 (now IH-35) with destruction if they did not leave immediately. They successfully defended their homes until forced out by Ulysses S Grant’s Army during the Texan Civil War under orders from Confederate President Jefferson Davis four years later while still inside Travis County boundaries). After the war ended in 1865 following Union victory over Confederate troops occupying Texas, most Texans left for other parts of the United States but some who remained behind founded Fredericksburg Academy in 1870 as a preparatory school for college students coming intotx after Reconstruction (the Thirties). The town of Fredericksburg was founded in 1836 by General Antonio L. McDowell and his men as a military outpost on the edge of what is now Texas. The small community grew quickly, and by 1851 it had a population of 1,000. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Fredericksburg was besieged by Confederate forces for two days before surrendering. It was one of the few towns to fall to Confederate forces. After the war, Fredericksburg rapidly regained its prosperity. By 1870 it had a population of 2,500 and was making large profits from cattle sales and cotton plantations. However, in 1875 an economic crash caused much social unrest in the town. A group of merchants organized themselves into a trade union and began to challenge local authorities regarding prices and wages- an action that ultimately led to their expulsion from Fredericksburg. In 1901 the towninal government merged with that of nearby Waco to form the present-day McLennan County government. Despite this merger, most aspects of local life remain unchanged today: residents continue to use their own language (the predominant one being English), elect their own officials, and maintain individual shops/markets/cities within their own municipalities while still sharing services with neighboring counties).
