Fredericksburg is a small town located in Hunt County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texan city-county hybrid. The first permanent settler in what is now Fredericksburg was James A. Kerr who arrived in 1845. He named his land "Kerr's Ferry" in honor of General James A. Kerr, one of the commanders of the Mexican War and later president of Texas as well as governor of New Mexico and Colorado. In 1846 when John Witherspoon became governor of Texas he ordered all men over 21 years old to leave Texarkana for Brazoria County where they would be allocated land for ranching and farming purposes by the government. This order set off a stampede that has been called "the greatest cattle drive in American history". Of the 7,000 men who left Texarkana on Witherspoon's orders 2,500 were killed or wounded while attempting to cross the Sabine River into Brazoria County. Many more were captured or scattered and never seen again. The town site was chosen as its location because it has an excellent harbor that could serve as a base for trading with surrounding villages along the Trinity River valley and beyond. The original post office was established in 1848 but declined due to low demand from customers traveling through nearby Austin or San Antonio on their way to Eagle Pass or Fort Worth (now Dallas). In 1850 Frank Jenson built a sawmill on Post Road which soon became known as "Jenson's Hill." The townsite grew rapidly thanks to trade with Nacogdoches (now Corpus Christi) and Lubbock (now Lufkin) on the Gulf Coast where goods such as cotton, salt water fish, wood products and hides were shipped upriver for export across Wichita Falls Bayou into northern Mexico City before being sent southward via Richardson Creek back downriver to Brownsville once it had reached its final destination - Acapulco on Mexico’s Pacific coast! By 1870 there were 4 stores/cities including 1 hotel/motel; 3 blacksmiths; 2 farmers; 10 mechanics; 8 laborers; 1 school teacher; 1 priest; 9 white residents (& 3 Indians) & 12 black residents (& 8 Indians) & 9 soldiers (& 6 Mexicans) situated along Main Street between First & Second Streets ol' Jasper Street

The town's fortunes changed when Confederate forces sacked it during the American Civil War, resulting in a large population exodus and loss of infrastructure. After the war, Fredericksburg regained its former prominence as a cotton town and grew rapidly into a major military base during World War II. Frederick'stown was founded in 1836 by a group of Germans who from the nearby town of Fredericksburg decided to move to what is now Texas. The town grew rapidly and soon became an important stop on the Mexican-American Trail. In 1849, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico and Frederick'stown lost its importance as a center of trade. However, it continued to be a small town with many residents working in nearby towns. On July 26, 1901, the town was destroyed by a fire that started while people were playing in the park.
