The history of the United States Air Force in Fredericksburg, Texas is a long and winding road. The first USAF Base was established in 1941 in what is now known as Gate 1. The facility was originally called North American Aviation Station at Gate 1, but was renamed after General George Custer during World War II to honor the fallen military general. In 1947,Gate 2 became the first USAF Base to be opened in Texas. It housed Tactical Air Command (TAC) headquarters for Southwest Asia until it relocated to Buchanan AFB near Wichita Falls in 1993. In late 1951, Headquarters USAF moved from Gate 2 to Gate 3 on I-35W, becoming known as USAAF Central Command (USACom). On July 15th of that year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower announced his decision that the USAF would become an all-volunteer force effective October 1st of that year. This change created a major reorganization within the USAF and new Base closures were announced throughout Texas which included Gate 3 when it reopened on November 17th at Laughlin Army Airfield south of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. It served concurrently with Laughlin Air Force Base north of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport until its closure on August 10th 1977 due to budget cuts by then-Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger. On December 8th, 1978 Center interceptor squadron "Eagle" transitioned from Republic F-101H Crusader jets into McDonnell Douglas DC-9s from gate 5 at Enterprise AFB east TX and Assumption AFB outside Phoenix AZ while also transferring some surplus jetliners from Malmstrom AFB MT also part of Gates Closure process along with many other base closings throughout western US over the next few years including Seymour Johnson AFB NC closed on January 12th 1980 along with Randolph AFB CA closing on May 6th 1981 making it only 24 months before gates were fully closures across most if not all USA bases

The University of Texas at Fredericksburg established its own air force in 1948. The university's Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps was the first such institution in Texas. The college also founded the Air National Guard's 1st Squadron, 4th Bombardment Wing in 1951. In 1957, UTF created a Graduate School of Military Affairs which later became the UTF School of Advanced War Studies. In 1969, UTF inaugurated an undergraduate program in airpower studies and graduate school programs followed in 1978 and 1990 respectively.
Federicksburg is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Federicksburg was founded in 1881 by soldiers from the Union Army who had been stationed there during the American Civil War. The town name honors Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his wife Elizabeth Eckford Lee. The first post office for Federicksburg opened on November 15, 1881. It was renamed Tellico Plains on October 3, 1890 after Stephen Fenton Tellico Sr., an early settler and namesake of Tellico Plains, in Harrison County, Tennessee. The original settlers were men from eastern North Carolina who had been called to assistance by Governor James Kenedy of Texas in suppressing secessionist activity within Tarrant County during the presidential election of 1880. In 1881, local citizens voted to rename the town after General Robert E.Lee and his wife Elizabeth Eckford Lee (1846-1915), widow of Confederate General Joseph Johnston (1838-1920). As a Virginian community loyal to Virginia during the American Civil War and thereafter, Federicksburg was one of several towns that remained open to Federal troops throughout Reconstruction following its end in 1865. For most of Reconstruction it functioned as a garrisontown with few economic opportunities for its residents other than agriculture or horticulture because no railroads passed through what is now Tarrant County until after World War II when Interstate 20 bypassed it entirely making it an even smaller community inside what is now Arlington County statewide

For example, since 1945 there have been numerous major renovations to bases such as Lackland AFB Texas which has seen extensive renovation programs throughout the years; Andersen AFB Guam which saw extensive refurbishment between 1990-1998; Offutt AFB Nebraska which saw significant renovation between 2006-2010; Davis–Monthan AFB Arizona which saw some significant renovations between 1985-1991; Shaw AFB Rhode Island underwent a complete overhaul between 1984-1987; Dyess AFB Texas completed a $200 million dollar renovation program in 2007-2009 and Whiteman AFB Missouri is scheduled for a major renovation project starting in 2020 that will add 3 new wings along with several other improvements. These examples alone demonstrate how USAF has come through times of austerity by investing in necessary infrastructure projects that help improve safety and efficiency on base areas across country!
