The Fort Worth Navy Garrison was founded in 1845 as the first military installation in Texas. The garrison operated until 1973 before being decommissioned and sold to the city of Fort Worth. In 1974, the City of Fort Worth donated land to the navy for use as a naval base. The fortifications on the site were renovated and renamed Naval Air Station Arlington (NAS Arlington). NAS Arlington was home to various types of aircraft during World War II including bombers, fighters, missiles, submarines and amphibious vehicles. On 1 July 1986, NAS Arlington became an airbase when it opened as Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Worth (JBSF) with Buena Vista Air Force Base. NAS Arlington hosted numerous events during Operation Desert Storm such as fighter flyovers and ground operations support. Today NAS Arlington is home to two squadrons of F/A-18C Hornets from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and one squadron of EA-6B Prowlers from Naval Air Station Corpus Christi.
