The Fort Worth Air Force Base (Ft. Worth AFB) is home to the Texas Air National Guard's 179th Fighter Wing, which provides air defense for the city of Ft. Worth and its surrounding suburbs. The wing was established in 1936 as the 133d Fighter Squadron, which was then redesignated as the 179th Fighter Group in 1941. The 179th FG served in World War II with distinction, being credited with three aerial victories over Japan. It returned to combat duty in 1946 and converted to jet aircraft soon thereafter, becoming one of the first fighter wings to use jets when they arrived at Ft. Worth AFB in 1951. In 1967, the armory on base was closed and groundSoldiers were sent to support Vietnam War operations out of Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio; however this lasted only a year before it was decided that Ft. Worth AFB would be better suited for military storage instead of active duty support roles for some time thereafter due to budget cuts affecting all USAF bases nationwide. In 1970, it reopened as an operational air force base under tho command of Tactical Air Command until 1992 when it became part of Air Combat Command under First Lt.-Gen Michael Doolittle's command after he successfully placed America into Desert Storm following Operation Neptune's Spear against Iraq during Desert Storm I on August 2nd 1990). In 1995-1996 Major General Don Armstrong took command from 1st Lt.-Gen Rick Atkinson who had been commanding at FtWorth AFB since1992 also 1LT Archibald Robertson assumed command until his retirement effective July 31st 1998 after more than 32 years USAF service including tours as Commander 5th Battle Squadron - Grumman F/A-18 Hornets flying out of Diego Garcia AB England; commander 15th Flying Training Wing - Keesler CF-18 Hornets flying training missions out of McKenzie Field NM; commander 357th Airlift Wing - Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers flyinglift missions throughout US continent linking Europe with points east using LOW Mobility Aircraft such as Cessna 172s or Beechcraft Baron turboprop planes; Commander 910th Bombardment Squadron (Airborne) - Boeing E-4C Skymaster/Pilotless Aircraft providing bombardment sorties during Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning November 17TH 1991 continuing through January 8TH 2003...... It can be said that Fort Worth AFB has been home to various types and configurations of aircraft throughout its history--from piston fighters like the 133d FS back in 1936 to jet fighters like the 179 th FG during World War II and into the 21 st century with everything from KC-135 bombers carrying supplies and ammunition across continents through Low MOBILITY Aircraft like Cessna 172s or Beechcraft Baron turboprops used for bombardment sorties during Operation Iraqi Freedom to today's E-4Cs providing airborne cover for coalition forces fighting against Saddam Hussein and his regime...............
