The Fort Worth Air Force Base has a rich air force history dating back to the late 1930s. The base was established as an aviation center in 1934 and was used for training of pilots and fighter aircraft. The first jet powered planes were stationed at the base in 1948. In 1961, the Air Force relocated its main headquarters from Wright-Patterson AFB to Fort Worth and began using the new facilities for operations of bombers, fighters, and reconnaissance aircraft. During World War II, Fort Worth played a significant role in the Allied victory by providing air support for ground forces on both European and Pacific fronts. In 1945, Fort Worth emerged as one of six United States Army Military Area Commands (MANA) which functioned as theater commands responsible for all U.SArmy activities in Texas and Mexico. Withdrawal of Japan’s military forces following World War II left Fort Worth with an increased need for civilian airspace management expertise within the post-war period. The USAF assumed control of Managed Airport Services (MAS) at Ft Worth upon its establishment on October 1, 1947; MAS comprised four separate agencies: Civil Aeronautics Administration (CA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Texas Aeronautics Commission (TAC), and Municipal Airport Authority (MAA). On July 1, 1951, MAS became part of Air Defense Command when that command was activated from Headquarters USAAF Eighth Air Forces; AFSC also absorbed MAS's predecessor agency FAA on June 30, 1952. Withdrawn military assets vacated by Operation Desert Storm in 1990 resulted in an overall plus-3% increase in population growth throughout Dallas/Fort Worth area between 1990 and 2000; this population growth rate is much higher than rates found throughout most major metropolitan areas during this time frame nationally. This high population growth rate is primarily attributed to job creation opportunities resulting from defense contractor relocation across SouthwestDallas/Fort Worth corridor during this time period including Northrop Grumman Corporation's $1 billion spinoff of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co., Inc.; Lockheed Martin Company's acquisition of Washington National Guard Bureau's assets located adjacent to Lockheed Martin facility northwest of downtown Dallas; Boeing Helicopter Parts & Supply Co.'s purchase of Hughes Helicopters' assets located east southeast of McKinney along IH 35W; Boeing Family Farms' investment into Nacogdoches County Agricultural Development District Additionally contributing to increased development are large new housing developments announced or under construction within walking distance or less than a mile away from several major airports including DFW International Airport - world class Business Class Terminal operated by American Airlines - LaGuardia Airlines - Dallas Love Field airport - Houston Hobby international airport - Arlington County Convention Center etc.; these developments will create thousands additional jobs over the next 10 years leading up to Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing due to rapidly increasing debt levels associated with continuing service overseas requirements etc.). On September 20th 1994 United States Senator Lloyd Bentsen introduced S 7997 – Dirigible Lift Wing Aircraft Carrier Flight Research Facility Act – which would authorize appropriations up to $2 million per year through fiscal year 1998 forResearch & Development activities associated with Dirigible Lift Wing Aircraft Carrier Flight Research Facilities at Ft Worth AFB; currently only research funding available through Science & Technology Directorate account continues unrestricted prioritizes technology transfer programs w/ foreign partners etc.. This represents a paradigm shift change when compared against past practice where Combat Crew Training Systems have been primary focus while standard weapons systems have been mothballed or slowly transferred downrange !!!
