The name for the town originated from a spring near where it now stands. In 1880, Anson Mills became the first major cotton mill in Texas and employed over 1,000 people. In 1960s there were few streets or blocks with more than one building and most of today's buildings were erected during that time period; only a small percentage date back to before 1860 when much of San Antonio County was still empty land.
