Forney was founded in 1879 by James W. Forney, a man who had earlier served as an artillery officer in the Mexican-American War and as general secretary of the Texas Railroad Company. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Santa Anna River, which made it a convenient shipping point for goods moving between Texans and Mexico. In 1915, Forney became the seat of Travis County, one of Texas' six county districts. The county was renamed Travis County District #2 in 1978 after then-Governor Rick Perry designated it as such. Today, Forney is a small town located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Austin along I-10. It has a population of approximately 8,700 residents and is the site of several businesses including ABC Corporation, Chemtronix Inc., and Safeway Supermarket chainsanchors Jiffy Lube and Alamo Rent-A-Car company. The downtown area is home to two churches—the First Baptist Church and Christ United Methodist Church—and two schools—the Webster School District No. 1/John Fenton Middle School and Stonewall Jackson Elementary School; Assemblies Hall also houses the offices of several local government entities including the Travis County Commissioners Court and Travis County Airport Authority; The first settler in what would become Forney was William Hargrave who arrived in 1871 with his family from Maryland. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Santa Anna River near present day Holcombe Field Park before dying in 1872 during an illness that he contracted while traveling through Mexico City en route to becomes governor of Coahuila Province south of Austin (now Chihuahua). His wife Mary Hargrave continued to live there until they migrated to Onalaska Creek at present day Huffman Prairie when their son William Jr. moved there with them in 1876 when he was just 9 years old following his father's death boat ride from Coahuila Province overland to Fort Worth via Brownsville Bayou on horseback crossing into Texas’ new Republic (then Presidio de la Bahia) east of San Antonio where he joined up with other young men enlisting for service at Sam Houston’s army against Mexican forces under General Manuel Micheltorena during that year’s “War for Independence” under Ulysses S Grant’s command than later becoming Assistant Secretary at War for Reconstruction under Ulysses S Grant himself soon after this conflict ended with Mexico ceding recognition to America as part thereof starting what would come to be known as The Lone Star State but primarily due largely to President McKinley & General Ross Perot efforts.)
