Forney is a city in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. Forney is located on the banks of the Trinity River and has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and cold winters. The first permanent settler in what would become Forney was James E. Forney who arrived on July 4, 1836 from Kentucky with his family. James Eager Forney had been born in 1814 in Ballinger County, Kentucky to Anthony Forney and his wife Catherine (née Caldwell). On July 4, 1836, James Eager Forney married Margaret Caddis who also came from Kentucky with her family. They set up a cabin on land that now includes much of downtown Forney. The only physical evidence remaining of this early community are some rough logs built by foragers around an old well which served as their water source until1875 when an artificial well was constructed nearby by Wm Hines & Sons Ltd.. The town named after James Eager Forney began to form around 1840 when several families decided to move from Ballard Township due to the great demand for cotton during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1850 there were just 12 residents living in downtown Byersville when it became apparent that merchants would not locate within walking distance of each other so new streets were laid out: Main Street ran east-west while Business Avenue ran north-south. In 1861 Confederate General John Boggs burned down Union General George Armstrong Custer's headquarters near present day University Boulevard and Main Street during battle at Magnolia Springs while retreating from Nacogdoches following their victory over Union forces at Prairie Grove Creek Bridge! Many people fled south into Springdale or west into Vernon before arriving at what is now downtown SoConnie between Broadway and Elm Streets about November 1861 where they founded a new town called Fort Myer which still exists today
