Flower Mound is a small town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,409 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Flower Mound were two families who arrived from Illinois in 1846. They named their land "Flower Mound" after their native flower, the daisy. In 1854–55, another family from Illinois brought over a group of Scots Presbyterians and called their settlement "Mound." By 1860, all of these name changes had diminishing results as people simply forgot about them and continued to call the place Flower Mound. In 1872, General Winfield Scott's army passed through Hood County on its way to victory over Mexico at Palo Alto Bridge. As American troops converged on nearby Fort Worth for reinforcements and supplies, local farmer John Hance built an adobe home near what is now downtown Flower Mound to serve as headquarters for his battalion commanders and other officers during their stay. This adobe continues to be used today as the town hall (marked by a large blue plaque). In 1886–87, A&P grocery store owner Elisha Dickinson donated land northeast of downtown for development into a community center and public square known as Dickinson Square. The first school in Flower Mound was opened in this square on November 3, 1888 by Mrs. J F Gundy with 11 students; it cost $245 per acre to build and required 12 acres (5 hectares) of cultivated ground plus 4 acres (1 hectare) of uncultivated land adjoining it for parkland.
