By 1851, two companies had started selling coffee near present-day Flower Mound: James Fenton’s Coffee House and Rutherford Bros. Coffee House. The first commercial printing press in Texas was built by David Bogue in Columbus, Ohio in 1853. In 1856, a group of farmers from Mexico purchased 3 acres of land east of town and began to grow coffee. The first commercial shipment of Brazilian or Turkish coffee arrived in Flower Mound on October 25th, 1860. In 1865, Jens Jensen opened his own shop at 513 S 2nd Street; he became one of the most successful Dutch-owned businesses in Texas at that time. By 1870, there were over 20 cafes operating throughout central Texas under different names including Dutchmen's CoffeeHouse (later renamed First National Bank), Java Place (later renaming African American Café), Dutchman's Inn (renamed White Sands Hotel), and Dutchman's Exchange (later renamed Dallas Club).

Flower Mound is a town in and the county seat of McKee County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It was formed in 1876 from the merger of two other small settlements, Flower Hill and Wichita Falls. The first permanent settler in Flower Mound was James H. Garland, who arrived there on horseback on November 15, 1876. Garland purchased land from David Ladd and his family and began to build a log cabin named Garland's Ranch. He had come down from Iowa Territory to join his old friend John Lee Clements in this new land area that lay just north of present-day Dallas. Garland's Cabin became known as Garland's ranch because it served as headquarters for many early settlers who operated here including General Sam Houston, Oliver Hazard Perry and Jarrad Witherspoon. When James Hargrave replaced Garland as pioneer leader of the community on October 16, 1880, he called it "Fruitvale." This name stuck until 1913 when McKee County renamed itself after George Washington scholar Thomas McKee (1793-1875). In 1881 Union Pacific Railway construction reached Flower Mound by way of what is now Red Oak Boulevard; railroad officials chose this name for the then unincorporated community because sugarcane would be harvested nearby at various plantations near Fort Worth during that year’s harvest season (now known as Thanksgiving week). At that time Fruitvale also contained one store which sold supplies for local farmers as well as general merchandise items available only in Fort Worth at the time such as flour and butter products; however later that year when fruit prices went up greatly due to shortages caused by California’s “Plant War” with Mexico there were no more stores selling agricultural products so local farmers stopped buying supplies from Fruitvale altogether and it slowly declined over time until finally closing its doors entirely in 1954. In 1912 McKinney Avenue was built through central Flower Mound giving residents easier access to jobs located south of town along Interstate 35W while Douglas Parkway preceded it eastward connecting downtown with Greenville/Fort Worth via Loop 610 West then I-35W before ending at Main Street leading northeast towards Dallas airport or west towards Uptown/Dallas proper where development continued unabated until zipper manufacturing took hold late into the 20th century making Rosehill much more socioeconomically advanced than earlier communities like Flower Mound which could mainly rely upon agriculture for their economy
The first known Native American settlement in what is now Flower Mound, Texas was by a group of Caddo Indians in 1836. A year later, the United States set up a military post at the site and named it Fort Worth because of its strategic location. In 1841, following the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded Texas to the United States as part of their overall defeat. The new land became known as New Mexico and was used for ranching and farming until the late 19th century when oil discoveries began making Flower Mound an important center for petroleum production.
