Flower Mound, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The townsite that now includes Flower Mound was first settled by Germans in 1839 as "Nauheim". It became part of Hidalgo County on July 15, 1846 when it was organized from parts of Clear Creek and Hudspeth counties. On February 14, 1851, the name of the town was changed to Flower Mound after a local flower. When Hudspeth County merged with Travis County on January 1, 1907, Flower Mound became part of Austin. The current name came about because a post office called "Flowers" had been established in nearby Medina in 1886 but failed to take off due to low population growth and lack of mailboxes. In 1915 the Flowers-Mound Cotton Mill closed due to economic reasons and all remaining residents were forced out by Union troops during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). A fire destroyed much of downtown Flower Mound in 1918; however most damage was repaired within two years. In 1952 the community voted to become an independent city and adopted its present name. The city has seen some success since then including becoming one of the fastest growing cities in Texas according to Forbes Magazine and ranking number 10th among US cities for job growth between 2000 and 2010 according toUSA Today rankings (the rank increased from 9th place in 2000). With such growth comes increased traffic congestion which has led more than once to police intervention
The Flower Mound, Texas history began with the arrival of American settlers in the area in 1837. The first known settler was James Caldwell. The city of Flower Mound was founded on the site of what is now downtown by Capt. John Sitton in 1882. By 1907, there were over 1,500 residents living in Flower Mound. In 1923, the City Council adopted a resolution to rename the city after José María Guadalupe Herrera y Costilla because he had made such an important contribution to Mexican-American History and Culture.
