The Flower Mound, Texas Army installation has a long and proud history dating back to the early 1800s. The first military unit stationed in the town was the 1st Regiment of Horse Artillery, which arrived in 1848. In 1862, the 1st Texas Infantry was activated at Flower Mound as part of the Union army during the American Civil War. It was here that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his forces on April 9, 1865. The present-day Flower Mound Army installation is home to three infantry brigades, one artillery regiment, and two Marine battalions. The installations include an operational training area for troops preparing for operations worldwide,975 acres of parkland with a variety of different types of trees and plants, four rifle ranges with ammunition storage capacity up to 100 rounds each, and many other auxiliary buildings and structures.

Flower Mound, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 614 at the 2000 census. The town of Flower Mound was founded in 1881 by John and Anna Flood. Anna Flood's parents were natives of Flower Mound, India. In 1890, the name of the town was changed to Flower Mound after a local flower grown nearby. The community grew slowly until it reached its current size in 1960 when it had a population of 1,063. The mainstay of the local economy has been agriculture for most of its history. Today, there are several businesses in the town that provide services such as retail sales, transportation and marketing support to farmers and ranchers. In recent years, there has been an increase in development within the boundaries of Flower Mound with both new homes being built and businesses opening up along I-35W which connects the two towns together. One example is The Crossing at Parkway Dr., which opened up in early 2011 as one of only two restaurants inside city limits in Johnson County – making it one stop for shoppers looking for everything from groceries to entertainment options.

The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States in 1849-1852. The city was founded in 1878, when a railroad line was built through the area and a station was built at what is now downtown Flower Mound. In 1902, a dam was constructed near today's Floresville and flower fields were flooded to create water storage capacity for the new dam. Today, parts of downtown Flower Mound are still used as commercial areas and there are several museums located within walking distance of the center. The Flower Mound community has been through various changes over its history, but has always retained its unique character which makes it an important part of Texas history.
