Farming in Farmers Branch began in the 1840s, when settlers started moving into the area. The first farmers in Farmers Branch were John and Rebecca Barton. They started a farm on what is now West Grand Avenue. In 1851, Isaac Asbury bought the Barton farm and moved his family to the property. He started a grocery store on what is now First Street. The Asbury family continued to own and operate their grocery store until 1966. In 1865, Fenton Waddell settled in Farmers Branch with his wife and two children. He operated a blacksmith shop on North Main Street for many years. Waddell also donated land to be used for farming purposes. In 1922, he donated another piece of land to be used for farming purposes. This land was renamed West Grand Avenue after him. In 1926, Farming Branch became a city when it was incorporated as a town by an act of the Texas Legislature ().
