The downtown core of Farmers Branch has been extensively renovated over the years since its incorporation as a city; most notably in 1977 when all local government buildings were moved to downtown from their original locations around First National Bank Park (now Fairpark). Now home to several large businesses as well as numerous small ones dating back to before 1978 (the old post office building still remains vacant), Downtown Merchants Association Incorporated has done much to maintain and update what once looked like an industrial ghost town while also helping to promote Farmer Branch as a vibrant community with many cultural attractions outside of its core functions such as arts programming or hosting conventions/fairs. A major issue facing Downtown Merchants Association Incorporated is that it does not have any dedicated funding source for keeping up with modern infrastructure needs such as expanded parking garage space or new streetscape projects; instead it relies on donations and memberships which increasingly are becoming difficult to come by given recent economic conditions across central Texas. This lack of dedicated funding can lead to long delays for necessary projects such as expanding accessible sidewalks or repairing water main breaks due both integer ratepayers’ inability or unwillingness contribute financially towards these types of costs nor do elected officials consider them important priorities compared other issues they face day-to-day; this situation has resulted in some abandoned projects which have taken on negative environmental impacts including extensive damage to adjacent properties adjacent to City Hall park where stormwater runoff floods into residential areas late at night causing significant aesthetic problems
