When the United States Air Force deployed its first squadron of F-15C/D jets in Farmers Branch, Texas in 1976, it was an event that would be remembered for a long time. The deployment marked the beginning of a long and successful partnership between the USAF and local county governments, which has led to countless air displays, military funerals and other events at the nearby Wright-Patterson AFB over the years. The USAF has played an important role in the County’s history since its inception as a municipality. At first it was only providing support for local farmers during harvest season; however, over time this evolved into more than just a service provider. In fact, through partnerships with both state and federal agencies, Farmers Branch has become one of Texas’ leading tourist destinations. This story begins with General James Van Dyke who served as Commander of IAF stationed in San Antonio during World War II. After victory had been achieved he returned home to his constituents and began working on developing plans for post-war reconstruction in his community which would lead to new businesses being established and citizens feeling like they were part of something larger. This vision became known as “The Van Dyke Plan” which involved creating jobs for both locals and refugees alike by establishing hospitals, schools and other infrastructure projects within walking distance of downtown. It wasn’t until 1949 when Farmers Branch became one of thirteen municipalities across Texas to form the State Capitol District (SCD) following passage of Senate Bill No. 666 by Governor Tom Connally. With this change came responsibility for providing law enforcement services within our city limits - something that had always been done by sheriff deputies from neighboring counties who patrolled our area on call basis. Although we may not have had all the same amenities available to us back then (like 24 hourEmergency Dispatch), we did have access to some really great resources thanks to our partnership with state government! For example, we received funding through SCD specifically earmarked for development within our city boundaries – money that helped build such iconic landmarks as Baylor University’s Medical Center and TX State University’s Main Campus today! So much has changed since then – thank you Gov Connally & UT System! We couldn't ask for anything more!
