There is no military deployment history quite like that of the Fort Worth, Texas Army National Guard unit Euless Unit Memorial. The unit was mobilized in 2001 and has been deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait. The unit's proud tradition began with World War II veteran Major John J. King who donated his home in 1969 to become the first home of the Euless Unit Memorial Museum. In 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Rick de Jong became the first commanding officer of the Euless Unit Memorial Museum after serving as a commander at Ft Worth Air Force Base. In 2006, Commander Charles A. Smith assumed command of the museum after over 10 years as Commandant of cadets at Lackland AFB. In 2007, Lt Col de Jong relinquished command to Lt Col Smith effective February 1st due to health concerns related to ageism within the Guard Bureau hierarchy. Today, there are more than 100 members from both active duty and Reserve components of the Euless Unit Memorial Museum including many local residents who have served our country through service in Iraq or Afghanistan including Drill Sergeant Darrell Buehler (4th Infantry Division), Lance Corporal Tyler Wiegand (1st Battalion 4th Marines),Sergeant Christopher Koppenhofer (3rd Squadron 5th Cavalry Regiment) and Corporal Patrick Mabus (2nd Brigade Combat Team 3rd Infantry Division).
