The first people to settle in what would become Euless were French colonists who founded the village of Bienville on November 12, 1822. The town was named for General James Eustis (1786-1845), who served as aide-de-camp to General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican–American War and as U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1829 until his death in 1835. On December 8, 1836, General Sam Houston Sr., commanding general of cavalry under Sam Houston's father and fellow Texan MajorGeneral Philemon MeeksHouston surrendered at San Jacinto Heights after leading an unsuccessful assault against Mexican forces at that site; Euless residents had earlier helped provide munitions for Houston's army during the siege of Austin. When Immigrants began arriving from Mexico in large numbers starting around 1850, many farmers started trading goods they produced along with whatever land they could find for miles around their homes for settlers willing to come over and work on their properties. The current post office building was built in 1909 and dedicated by Mrs. J. W. Hoggtagnan. The town began to grow rapidly after World War I when General Motors constructed a large plant there in 1922.
