The population of the city grew to over 100,000 during its heyday before declines in the late 1960s and early 1970s. However, today Ennis is a quiet community with a rich history that can be found throughout its neighborhoods and businesses. James Ennis was born on October 30th, 1825 in County Clare, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1848 and worked as a carpenter for many years before starting his own construction company in 1875. By 1897, he had built more than 20 homes in Dallas County. James and MarthaEnnis were married on November 12th of that year at Christ Episcopal Church located on Commerce Street in downtown Dallas. They had one child together- Johnathan who would grow up to become an entrepreneur and business magnate within Texas' largest city! Johnathan's father had been born into a wealthy family but lost everything when the Panic of 1893 destroyed their investments following the stock market crash that followed US President Andrew Johnson's proclamation of Reconstruction policies! Johnathan turned to business instead and quickly rose through the ranks of Dallas' most successful entrepreneurs including becoming president of A&P grocery store (1912-1916) & Texas Instruments (1920-1924). After purchasing large tracts of land around downtown Dallas from local ranchers in 1928-29, he founded The University District neighborhood now known as Downtown Dallas! The Businessman's Neighborhood Association helped To keep alive some aspects of what made Arlington Heights such an interesting place even into the 1990s - vibrant shopping districts near all types of restaurants; movie theaters; banks; post office; health clinics;; etc., without having Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts close down!! One thing we remember about those days is how much fun people could have just walking around areas like Elmwood Park or Hyde Park - there wasn't anything like high speed Internet then!! Today it seems everyone has got themselves apartments/houses/condos...etc... so these places are noticably less lively than they used to be! From what I've been told there are no real remnants left from back then other than maybe some old cars parked outside some old buildings !! It sounds like life may have changed For Better or Worse !!!
