National Guard gifts have been a part of El Paso’s history for over sixty years. The gift tradition began when the El Paso National Guard was created in 1912. From then until the present, members of the national guard have donated their time and resources to help support local communities. Today, the El Paso National Guard provides more than just a military presence; it is an organization that offers its members quality services such as education, social welfare, and volunteerism. In addition to providing service to our community, theEl Paso National Guard also has a rich history that can be traced back to World War I. When America entered World War I, many El Paso businesses offered their employeeships to the military in order to help support our country. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued executive order 6ickers 9 which directed all American organizations “to contribute money or other property whatever may be needed for material assistance or propaganda purposes during any war with Germany†(Mosesberg). This order not only helped provide materials and equipment for our troops but also motivated citizens to donate items such as food, clothing, and toys for soldiers on overseas campaigns. As America entered World War II, donations of goods increased again as people realized how important it was for us to remain strong and united during this difficult time. Since the creation of the El Paso National Guard in 1912, we have given back more than we’ve taken from our community. We are proud of our past contributions and look forward to continuing serving our community through future generations.

The first units were raised in 1775 as the Continental Army, and during the Revolutionary War they played an important role in fighting for the American Revolution. After the war, the men of the national guard enjoyed a period of peace until new wars cropped up in the 1800s. In 1824, President James K. Polk created a National Guard Bureau to organize and equip these troops for military service. At this time, also, there was a significant buildup of army strength due to President Andrew Johnson’s goal of making America “the great power†again. The National Guard greatly increased its troop numbers during World War II; however, because most members served on auxiliaries or in other government-organized militias instead of being drafted into military forces, their combat experience was limited. In 1964, after more than 40 years of service to our country as part of various specialties within both state and federal militaries, the National Guard was finally placed under one unified command with centralized ammunition stores and training facilities at Fort Hood Texas. Today’s national guard is a highly respected institution across our country; it provides essential services such as Guardsmen who protect critical infrastructure like pipelines or airports from sabotage or terrorist attack; emergency response teams that respond to natural disasters; whether deployed domestically or abroad when called upon by our nation’s leaders; law enforcement officers assigned to support local police departments; soldiers who serve in peacekeeping operations around the world; and many more specialized roles which contribute toward keeping our communities safe while providing necessary resources for our citizens. These organizations are committed to upholding America’s values through service and selfless dedication to Our Troops!

El Paso, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of El Paso County. The population was 785,821 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest city in El Paso County and the second-largest city in Texas after Austin. The Mexican–American War (1846–48) occurred within its boundaries. The current City Limits were created on February 22, 1912 by an act of the Texas Legislature as part of a plan to improve communications between El Paso and other cities in Tarrant County. The area now comprising El Paso was first settled by Anglo Americans who arrived during Rancho San Antonio's exploratory period from 1835 to 1840. They built several smalladobe ranches here until 1851 when they decided to establish themselves permanently with a rancho called East Apache Creek which they named Albuquerque de la Garza y Pavón after José Antonio Pavón, their leader on this trip. From this point forward, most native American settlement took place along one or more streams that emptied into La Hacienda River: San Miguel Creek for Mexicans, Colorado River for Anglo Americans, Menchaca Creek for Choctaws/Athabascans/Kiowa Indians and Pima Apache Indian Reservation for Apaches/Poncho people. In 1857 General Sam Houston purchased 1 million acres (4 square miles) from Manuel Beltrones at Matamoros Dam across from Presidio del Rio Grande near modern-day Ciudad Juárez; he named it Rice Fields outside Huntsville because he intended to use it as his private landowning farm rather than sell it to Mexicans under Mexico's land grant program then being administered through US hands. On October 16, 1860 Houston sent Lieutenant Colonel James Fayette Brown with 800 Texans under command including 100 mounted riflemen led by Captain Waddell Wells back overland via Novato Pass over Tejas Mountains towards Vera Cruz where they encampment had been established earlier that year – what is known today as November 16th event is considered historical westward expansion of Texas starting with Houston's victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto
