The El Paso Marine Museum is one of the most important and well-maintained marine museums in the country. The museum has a collection of over 50,000 items related to maritime history. The museum is open to the public from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 10am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free for all visitors. The El Paso Marine Museum's collection began with donations by local citizens in the late 1800s. One of the earliest donations was a set of anchors from USS Constitution (1812) which were donated by Mr. John Sweeny. In 1906, a group of local businessmen donated new ships, including HMS Erebus (1807), HMCS Athènes (1906), HMS Foudroyal (1810), CSS Virginia (1775), and USS Pompano (1863). In 1922, another group of businessmen donated two large vessels: USS Boston(1801) and USCGC Harriman(1922). These donations formed part of an overall campaign that contributed nearly $6,000 towards restoringUSS Constitution which was lost at sea in 1918 after being sunk by a Spanish warship off Galveston Island。 In 1934, another donation was made when local businessman Rufus Norris donated several items from his ship SS Enterprise.(1900) Unfortunately, Enterprise sank shortly afterwards while sailing into San Antonio Bay due to bad weather conditions aboard her cargo vessel sister ship SS Topeka.(1914) This particular donation marked the start of an era whereEl Paso became home to one of America's largest marine museums as it currently contains over 50,000 items from both domestic and international maritime collections.

The name "El Paso" is derived from Spanish colonial era days when it was called Ciudad de Paz (City of Peace). It was so named because it was one of four towns in what became Tarrant County (the others being Arlington, Grapevine, and San Angelo). In 1867, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna established Mission San José Arcángel northwest of modern-day El Paso to serve Mexican citizens living east of the Rio Grande River. This settlement grew rapidly due to its proximity to cattle drives that routed herds off the range into Mexico City. On May 15, 1868,[4] Santa Anna assigned JunÃpero Serra as governor of New Mexico Territory with responsibility for allocating land northward along the Rio Grande for ranching settlements. He selected this location for Mission San José Arcángel because it would be close to Mexican settlers who wished not to go westbound on their way to California during gold rushes there in 1848-49.[5][6] As development occurred around Mission San José Arcángel—particularly along present-day I-10—the name "El Paso" began appearing on maps and documents dating back to those early days. A post office called "Paso del Norte" opened in 1865,[7] but no street grid exists reflecting this early use. El Paso is a city in southwestern Texas, United States. It was incorporated as a town on November 15, 1875, by the merger of two other towns - Rancho El Paso and Nacogdoches. The name "El Paso" comes from the Spanish language word "el paso" meaning "the way". The original Mexican land grant for El Paso was called Rancho de la BahÃa Blanca. In 1821, Antonio López Iratus granted this land to Captain John B. Cooke for $10 per acre. Cooke named his new settlement San Miguel de Allende after Saint Miquelon, also known as St. Louis of Mexico. On February 14, 1835, General Santa Anna ordered all but 7 men of the 1st Battalion of Texas Rangers to march into ambush at what is now El Paso when they left their post at Mission Concepcion to rendezvous with Major José AsÃs Cuadra at the Alamo Adobe house surmounted by the stately whiteMission San Fernando Rey del Rio (Spanish: Nuestra Señora del Rosario). After an hour's pursuit by 26 mounted horsemen and 130 foot soldiers under Colonel José Avilés y Vargas, they reached safety on Mayagüez Creek just east of present-day downtown El Paso after being forced to abandon their horses and retreat downwind through brush and cactus fields. A grandstand had been erected near Mission Concepcion where General Santa Anna delivered his first public address before Datu Lipatuan AgustÃn Pico organized the Texas Rangers in 1836 which led to Cartago's Rebellion that successfully suppressed much cattle raiding in central Texas until 1840 The area around today's downtown El Paso was settled mainly by Anglo Americans who arrived during or shortly following the American Civil War seeking lands south of Houston including parts now located in West Texas Tribune Mountain National Monument
