In 1937, the park became an official municipal gun range with a clubhouse and course. In 1944, it was decided that the ranges should open seven days a week so that more people could come by to shoot. From then on, the number of tournaments held at El Campo has steadily increased; in 1951 there were ten tournaments hosted total while in 1967 there were thirty-six tournaments overall! Today, over one hundred years later, El Campo Shooting Park remains one of Texas’ topgun attractions and provides an amazing opportunity for Texans of all ages to experience its history and culture while shooting some great Panther Firearms!

El Campo, Texas is a small city located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 3,818 at the 2000 census. The El Campo area consists of 367 acres and is home to the El Campo Museum and the El Campo Theater. The first settlers in this area were Spanish immigrants who arrived in 1786. They initially named the place San Felipe de Betanzos after their patron saint. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered oil well near present-day El Campo and decided to name the town after him. The town was founded on May 15, 1836 by Captain James Fenton while he was commanding Fort Richardson on an expedition led by Governor Isaac Newton Houston. In 1870, a post office was established at El Campo with Wm Sibley serving as the first Postmaster General. In 1888, a school system was organized with Mrs Alys Clements as Superintendent of Schools. On November 1, 1889, there were 514 people living in El Campo when it incorporated into Hudspeth County as a municipal corporation under the jurisdiction of Austin City Limits Commission. The current mayor is Jerry Ortiz and that of District 2 is Ricardo Montoya Jr..

The town became an important center for cattle grazing and shipping, and also served as a stop on the Chisholm Trail. In 1865, the Texas Railroad arrived in El Campo, making it the first railroad town in Texas. In 1921, El Campo became a city and was renamed after José Antonio El Campo Jr., who had helped create the town. The city has since grown to include a variety of commercial and cultural institutions, including two universities: Rice University and UT-Austin.

In 1860, General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked El Campo with 3,000 men and 5 cannons. The town was destroyed but some buildings were saved including the courthouse which still stands today. In 1865-1866, the town hosted a Expo America fair that featured exhibits from all over the United States. In 1880-1881, when Texas became an American state, El Campo became part of Dallas County under Governor John Connally’s administration as well as other nearby villages such as Garland and Fort Worth Jails which are still standing today along with many other buildings from this time period such as churches (First Baptist Church is now called “The Cathedral”), schools (St Mary’s Episcopal School is now called “The Academy”), post office (now known as FedExField) etcetera………..
