During World War II, El Campo was one of several U.S. military bases that housed thousands of soldiers and their families members stationed along the Mexican-American border; many residents worked at these installations. After V-E Day (1946), many servicemen returned home and many businesses closed; however, some reopened after adjustment payments were received from Mexico. A local radio station first aired on KFNO (AM) in 1928 under the name "The Cowboyatern" before becoming KLUV (FM) in 1951 when ownership changed hands several times until being purchased by Clear Channel Communications subsidiary San Antonio Broadcasting Company on October 1, 1984; this made KLUV one of two stations owned by San Antonio rather than Temple University which controlled all other FM stations within San Antonio limits including KFNO/KLUV which operated as a Univision affiliate until KHOU bought them out July 12th 2006). The transmitter for both KLUV & KFNO is located atop Mount Wilson southwest of downtown San Antonio not far from IH35 freeway exit #271 off SH 146 just south of Rio Grande Valley state line making both antennas approximately 110 miles due east or northeast from Austin TX
