El Campo is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now El Campo were the Gillespie family who arrived in 1836 and laid out a farmstead on a creek that flows through the town today. The Gillespie family also founded Greenville, which is located south of El Campo and west of Greenville Junction. In 1854, James Bicknell moved from Missouri to Hudspeth County and began farming near present-day El Campo. He named his farm "Bicknell's Prairie" after James Bicknell, an American Revolutionary War soldier who fought for Texas. In 1865, General Sam Houston granted land to John Nance Garner for cattle ranching around present-day Humble and Cedar Creek townships near Elmhurst (now part of Austin). This grant made El Campo possible because it lay within Garner's private Ranchland property on the east side ofeches River. In 1886 white men built a gristmill on Clear Fork Creek in what is now downtown El Campo; this mill became known as Clear Fork Mill & Supply Co., which still stands today as one of Hudspeth County's most popular tourist attractions due to its history and its large collection of antique flourishes from early mills in rural America. A post office was established at El Campo in 1887; it remained in operation until 1915 when it was replaced by the current post office called Round Rock/ElCampo (although no physical building remains from that time). The first store opened at Downtown Round Rock in 1895 but closed within two years because local buyers were not interested in shopping there anymore due to changing trends across all aspects of life outside Round Rock during that time period including agriculture; however, some shopkeepers did remain inside Downtown RoundRock until about 1912 before moving out onto Main Street where they continued selling items until 1935 when they merged with several other businesses across downtown which made up Old Town Square which continues to be an important commercial center today Shopping has returned to Main Street since then with only one interruption: A reopening event celebrating 100 Years Of Round ROCK Businesses On Main Street On October 14th 2019!

The town was named for General James W. Elkins, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as an army general during Reconstruction in Texas. In 1876, James W. Elkins and his wife Sarah A. Elkins founded this small community to help support their growing ranching operation. The town continued to grow until World War II when it reached its peak population of around 200 people. However, after the war ended, the population declined rapidly due to various factors such as dramatic reductions in cattle production on the ranching economy throughout Texas following World War II ( Ranchos de Estados Unidos ). Today,El Campo remains an unincorporated community with a population of around 100 people that benefits from its proximity to Austin and surrounding counties including Hudspeth County
