There is no one definitive history of gourmet coffee. However, some general points about its development can be made. Coffee became an important commodity in the early 18th century, and this led to a rise in demand for high-quality beans. In response, coffeehouses began popping up throughout Europe, and soon people were enjoying unique blends and roasts from around the world. This led to a growth in small-scale coffee production, as well as an increase in the number of cafés able to serve high-quality beverages at affordable prices. Additionally, advances in technology helped make espresso machines more versatile and efficient – making it possible for people to enjoy gourmet coffee at home on their own schedule.
The first coffee was ground in a small pot on the property of one of Francisco de Miranda's plantations near what is now Guatemala City. The beans were roasted by slaves. Coffee began to be exported from Peru and Ecuador in the 17th century, and Portuguese traders brought coffee to Brazil in the 18th century.
