El Campo is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brownsville–San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit El Campo were the French in 1821 and 1824. The area now known as El Campo was part of the Doña Ana River Indian Reservation until it was ceded to Mexico in 1846. The town began as a cattle station on an old path from San Antonio through Hudspeth County and into Coahuila and Texas by way of Pecos Creek. In 1865, two brothers founded the Consolidated Land & Mining Company with land around present-day El Campo included in what is now Hidalgo County. In 1870, James Wirtz arrived from Ohio with his family and started a grocery store near present-day Loop 410 and Main Street. Wirtz soon became one of America's most important ranchers, operating more than 100 ranches across 6 states before dying in 1906 at age 90 years old. His ranch holdings passed to his son John Wirtz Jr., who operated them until 1978 when they were sold to Anadarko Petroleum Corporation for $3 million USDUS In 1903, local schoolteacher Lina Epps opened her first schoolroom west of San Antonio on Elm Street in what is now Righteous Brothers Drive. Classes originated there until 1912 when Mrs. Epps moved her school offshoot into what is now First Baptist Church Drive (just east of HWY 25). That building served as La Casa de la Esperanza Elementary School from 1915-1925 before being converted into PreKindergarten through 3rd grade (now called Parkview Elementary) on 4th Avenue SE in 1925; that structure currently stands vacant at 404 Nueces St., just north of IH 35E between Loop 610/I-10 and US 281/US 87W .
