El Campo is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,841 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock–San Antonio metropolitan area. El Campo is located on the border of Hidalgo and Starr Counties. The first settlers in what is now El Campo were Spanish heritage people who came to the area in 1821 from Zacatecas, México. The name "El Campo" means "the place where trees grow." The first post office was established in 1827 and was called San José de los Angeles. It was moved to its current location in 1881 when the railroad came through the area. The town started as a community of about seventy people and grew rapidly due to agricultural production which became dominant after a sawmill opened there in 1865. A second sawmill opened in 1886 and soon thereafter other businesses began opening up such as groceries, furniture, hardware stores and restaurants. In 1915 an electric power plant was built along with several other industries including airplane manufacturing which has continued until present day. Today El Campo is still a very small town with just over 1,000 residents but it continues to thrive thanks to its strong agricultural industry which employs many local citizens as well as visitors who come for various tourist attractions such as hunting opportunities or wildflower viewing ceremonies. There are also several shopping centers located around town that offer variety items including clothes, home improvement supplies and even gasoline stations!

El Campo is the county seat for Cameron County. The first settlers to El Campo were James Fenton and his wife Esther who arrived in 1881. They named their new settlement after the Mexican Rancho de las Islas de San Bárbara which they had just discovered. The ranch was located on an island in Lago Agrio and it was here that they began to farm the land that would become El Campo. In 1886, George Clements purchased the Rancho de las Islas de San Bárbara from James Fenton and erected a two-story adobe building on its property which served as the town's courthouse until 1902 when a new courthouse was built within walking distance of the original structure. Over time, many different businesses have been established in EL Campo including grocery stores, banks, lumberyards and more. In 1984, EL Campo became home to the Cameron County Fair which continues to be one of the most popular events in the community today. Today, El Campo is a thriving community with many residents who are proud of their hometown due to its history and culture. It is known for its great shopping opportunities as well as its strong community spirit which makes everyone want to be a part of it!
