The history of the El Campo Army National Guard is a long and proud one. The unit was first organized in 1892 as the First Infantry Regiment, Texas Infantry. During World War I, the regiment served in France and Belgium, where it was known as the “Black Angels” for its black uniforms. After World War I, the regiment was redesignated as the El Campo Army National Guard and assigned to serve in Texas during the 1920s. In 1932, following annexation of Texas by Mexico, the regiment became part of Mexican Defense Forces and continue serving in that capacity until 1938 when it reverted back to its original name, The First Infantry Regiment, Texas Infantry. During World War II, elements of The 1st TX INF were called up for service in Europe where they fought under Major General John invaded Germany on D-Day fron Normandy beachhead to provide support for Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany. They also provided security for Ft Worth during Brown v Barnes Hearn trial which ended with execution of Texan Gov't official by U.S. government agents at Ft Worth internment camp (now Arlington Cemetery). Upon return from war their battalion was demobilized at San Antonio before being reorganized and placed into federal service with Headquarters Company coming out California while remaining attached to 5th US Signal Battalion at Fort Belvoir Virginia untilactivated there on 6 Jun 1945; company commander Captain Wm Huggins reported direct contact with top secret Manhattan Project scientists while stationed at Ft Belvoir Virginia In 1946 HQ COMPANY disbanded leaving captain Huggins commandeered 1/3rd TX INF but continuing attached 5th Signal Battalion along side other units activated during WWII including 3/5ths CA Inf (later Activated 9 Jul 1951) which later became 3d Brigade Combat Team (4th ID) activated 10 Sep 1952 headquartered here concurrently w/1st Cav Div & 2d Ranger Brigade also activated here concurrent El Campo AFB Reserve Unit activation date: 15 Dec 1956 El Campo AFB Reunion Unit activation date: 17 Mar 1959

El Campo, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,883 as of the 2010 census. The first Spaniard to see what is now El Campo was Alonso de León on July 12, 1541. He named it "Los Encampados" (the encampments). A post office called Encampado was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it closed in 1902. In 1849, the United States acquired the Rancho San Antonio de las Flores from Manuel Antonio Linares y Villa. This ranch passed through several hands before it came into the ownership of James Hogg who sold it to John Wise in 1862. The land that became El Campo was part of this grant. In 1881, Will Rogers purchased 640 acres from James Hogg for $5 per acre. Over time there has been an increase of housing developments on this land with a population over 2,000 residents today. The history of El Campo begins with its original location at some distance below present day downtown El Paso and east of present dayAliceville due to its strategic location along both routes which led northward into New Mexico Territory and then eastward into Hudspeth County during the period when those regions were unincorporated areas under Mexican rule. At one time there were three settlements dotting these initial locations: Los Encampados (later known as El Campo), Aliceville and Socorro Mesa near Socorro Lakealthough all had less than 100 residents at their peak occupancy between 1870-1920 because travel times were so long between these points! Today only Aliceville remains with a population over 50 although community functions have ceased since the sale of its property to ranchers in 1978! El Campo is a small town in the Texas Hill Country, located some twenty-five miles south of Austin. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in El Campo were Indians who had been living there for centuries before European settlement began. pioneers from San Antonio and other nearby towns began to settle in El Campo in 1845, and soon there was a large community established with dwellings, stores, churches and schools. In 1846 two brothers named John Hogg and William Fenton founded what would become Richards Ranch. They land on which today's El Campo lies was once part of Mexicanán cattle ranchos that operated from the 1830s until around 1865 when Mexico ceded it to the United States. During Reconstruction era (1865-1912), El Campo became an important center for cotton production due to its location near major railroads and its easy access to markets in East Texas and West Texas. A cotton gin was built in 1903 by Leland Stanford Jr., one of America's most successful businessmen, while he lived in Austin; this helped add much needed jobs during the Great Depression years.
El Campo was founded in 1878 by Antonio L. Alcalde, a Mexican immigrant. The town grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers and miners who came to the area for gold and other minerals. By 1907, El Campo had a population of over 10,000 people. The town was renamed after General Francisco Villa in 1935. In 1957, El Campo became the first city in Texas to adopt an affirmative action program when it hired African Americans as police officers and firefighters.
