Edinburg, Texas is home to the largest coffee roasting complex in the world. The city has been roasted beans for over 100 years and has a rich coffee history that can be traced back to 1892. In that year, two small businessmen named John Waddell and Frank Epperson opened up their first store in an old adobe house on U.S. 183 near downtown. They sold coffee beans and creamer from their shop until 1914 when they moved to what is now the Edinburg Coffee & Tea Center on Elm Street. The first coffee roasters in Edinburg included Mr. Waddell, who roasted all of the town’s beans; Mr. Epperson, who supplied both local grocery stores and other businesses with his delicious caffeinated beverages; and Carl Fenton, who was responsible for manufacturing Edinburg’s first espresso machines in 1922. By 1924, there were five different roasters operating in Edinburg: three by Mr. Waddell himself (Mr. Gassman & Sons), one by Mr. Epperson (Fenton Bros.), one by Captains Harry Purdy and Eddie Jenson (Purdy-Jenson Beans), one by Captains Red Wing Schmidt (Schmidt Bros.) and George Barbera (Barbera-Lloyd Coffee Roasters), and one by Captain Jack Liles (Liles Bros.) which became known as “The Big Five” because it served as the primary source of beans for all of these companies combined! In 1951, a new company called The Texas Coffee Company was founded in order to provide competition to The Big Five members! That same year saw the opening of what would become known as the most famous coffee shop in town – The Daily News Cafe! This establishment quickly became popular due to its fresh roasted beans and tasty morning refreshments! Over time, The Daily News Cafe evolved into one of the most renowned tourist destinations in town with its own museum filled with interesting memorabilia related to its history! Today, Edinburg boasts some of America’s most iconic coffee shops – including Starbucks®, Dunkin' Donuts®, Peet's Café®, Dutch Bros., Caribou Coffee®, Lenox Café*, Montero Cafeteria*, Just For KIDS*', Paws Patisserie*, LaCroix Chapel Brew House*', plus numerous specialty cafes scattered throughout various neighborhoods within town! This land became part of what is now Comal County. Edinburg's economy depends largely on agriculture and manufacturing; its biggest industries include food processing, automobiles, paper products, and metalworking. Edinburg has two schools: Edinburg High School and Lamar High School which compete in the Dallas-Fort Worth Independent School District (DFW ISD). As of 2019 there are approximately 459 students enrolled at Lamar High School with plans to increase enrollment to 1,100 by 2023 . There are also 10 families from nearby Richardson that attend Edinburg Central Catholic Schools which share facilities with Lamar while also attending DFW ISD
