However, residents were able to maintain their social status through their involvement in local churches and charitable organizations. As part of this process, many people within Nueces County decided to move to Texarkana because that city had become an important center for commerce and politics within the new republic. By 1890, however, Edinburg had regained its heyday as a commercial center due to its production of cotton; it also experienced significant growth in manufacturing during this time period including printing presses and cigars.
