The Webb County Sheriff's Department was founded in 1899 and currently employs over 100 deputies. The department has jurisdiction over a wide area including parts of Midland, Odessa, San Angelo, and Canyon City. In addition to law enforcement duties, the sheriff's department provides public safety services such as streetlights and security patrols. In 1960, the Webb County Sheriff's Department received a gift from then-President John F Kennedy. The gift was an American Ford patrol car nicknamed "Frosty". Frosty had been donated by President Eisenhower during his presidency and had previously been used by Dallas Deputy Sheriffs Tom Landry and Jack McGrath. Eagle Pass, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 3,057 at the 2010 census. It is located on FM 727 south of Austin. The now-defunct Eagle Pass Lumber Company was founded in 1879 by David S. Eagle and J.A. Pratt as a sawmill and lumberyard near present-day Interstate 35 and FM 1492. The company operated until 1907 when it closed due to lack of demand for its products from the growing city of Austin. In 1912, eaglePass Logging Co., also founded by David S. Eagle, reopened as a sawmilling and milling business with an emphasis on pine lumber production from the Bryce Canyon Mountains east of Eagle Pass proper. This mill continued operations until 1958 when it went out of business following a series of strikes by employees over wages and other grievances.[1] In 1916, local entrepreneurs organized the Lone Star Timber Company to purchase portions of the former Eagle Pass Lumber Co.'s assets including the mills and sawmills along I-35 north of town (the current site of Bastrop). The new company became one of Texas' leading timber producers with operations stretching through much rural Hudspeth County into modern day Anahuac Parish across the Colorado River Valley beyond Eagle Pass proper; this included holdings in Raton (later Alamogordo), Socorro (later Socorro Junction), White Sands (later White Sands Ranch), Falcon about 5 miles northeast of town,[2][3] Coalgate about 8 miles southeast[4] and oldest surviving open cut coal mine in Texas at Gainesville about 12 miles east from town on US 281/US 287 known as "Old Fort Hill" since 1875 – all within easy reach by wagon or horseback ride from our little community until recent times when we have had to rely more heavily on transportation options like automobiles which are becoming ever harder to find & maintain here! These days our community still relies largely upon agriculture for many things such as food & water but there are some good hopes that if things stay mostly stable we may see some restoration or development taking place here again soon!
