Eagle Pass is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Eagle Pass was founded in 1876 by Hugh Lawson McDowell and his wife's family as a cattle drive from Wichita Falls to San Angelo. The first post office for Eagle Pass was established in 1877. In 1907, the town became an independent city after being annexed by Austin. On December 12, 1915, Eagle Pass seceded from Austin and became an unincorporated community again. In 1959, the town of Eagle Pass passed a resolution declaring itself an "attractive place for white students to study agriculture" and encouraging enrollment in agricultural high schools there. As recently as 1980 only 7% of the town's population were white students; however this number has since increased to over 50%. The original hill upon which Eagle Pass sits today was once covered with oak trees that used to provide lumber for local buildings until those trees were cut down about 100 years ago when logging began on nearby Hillsboro Dam site which would create much more noise than today’s natural ecosystems do due to its height above ground level (about 4500 feet). A short distance away from where the now blocks off Fannin Rd., one can see several old-growth cedar beams that still rise above what used to be our streets and sidewalks! From what I could tell they are quite impressive even though they may have been standing for centuries without any major damage orualy taking place!
