Eagle Pass, Texas is located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua and was first settled by Anglo Americans in 1867. The town was founded by Capt. George W. Eagle, an American officer with the California Volunteers who had been ordered to protect travelers on the Pecos River. In 1870, Eagle Pass became a U.S. military post named Fort Worth Barracks after General William T. Sherman's army occupied it during the American Civil War. In 1911, Will Rogers came to Eagle Pass and filmed his famous movie "The Great Train Robbery." The town received national attention for this event when hundreds of people converged on Eagle Pass to view the filmcrews set up along Main Street Later that year, Hurricane Floyd struck southern Texas and caused extensive damage both in Eagle Pass and further north near Amarillo . A few weeks after Floyd made landfall, eaglepass residents banded together to help clean up damages caused by the storm; this event is also considered to be one of the earliest acts of volunteerism in Texas history.
