Duncanville is a small town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Duncanville was named for General James Duncanson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas. The townsite was laid out by Andrew Johnson in 1871. The first post office opened in 1870, and the name changed to Duncanville in 1875. A railroad station was built here in 1890 and served as the town's commercial center until it closed down in 1951. The first store on Main Street opened here on December 16, 1870. In 1907, two churches were built: First Presbyterian Church (later renamed United Methodist) and Second Baptist Church (now known as Christmastime Chapel). The post office closed here on July 6, 1951; however, mail continued to be delivered through nearby Fort Worth until that date. The town won its first award for excellence from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for Advanced Technologies Program local development grant program on November 3, 2006 - an event which celebrates NIST's designation of Duncanville as a technology hub for Southeast Texas/Midwestern US region . On October 2nd 2007 another ceremony took place recognizing excellence achieved during 2006-2007 school year with a plaque being hung outside First Presbyterian Church marking this occasion . In February 2009 there was an extensive fire that destroyed most of downtown Duncanville including many buildings dating back to the 1800s including one original courthouse building which still stands today hosting several businesses . As a result of this devastating fire many residents had to flee their homes taking with them all their belongings including furniture, clothes and art but also many memories from their childhoods . Some residents have since started reconstruction efforts such as erecting new fences around their homesostones so they may never again live conditions like those experienced during that time period

Duncanville, Texas is a small town in the Jim Bowie area of central Texas. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. Duncanville is named after General Duncan who led an American army in the Mexican-American War and Battle of San Jacinto. The town was founded in 1881 by John W. Dunlap and his family as a trading post on the Panhandle of Texas. In 1907, Duncanville became a city when it amalgamated with nearby Fort Worth. The first settlers to what is now Duncanville were Giles, Andrew, David and others from Scotland who came overland through Tomball Pass in 1836. Their journey took six months and they arrived at what is now downtown Duncanville on July 20, 1836. They built a log cabin about two miles east of present day Main Street on Hwy 281/US 29A (now US 183). They named their settlement for General James Pemberton who had lead the Ulysses S Grant’s forces during the Mexican-American War that ended with Mexico ceding California to America. In 1840, three brothers from Glasgow – Alexander Neil (a doctor), George Neil (a lawyer) and Hugh Macdonald (who married one of pioneer Anna O’Neill’s sisters) also settled hereabouts. Three years later they erected another log cabin on current Main Street which served as their courthouse until1864 when court sessions were held at Fort Worth castle where much more important events occurred such as land sales, treaties etc.. For many years Main Street between 2nd Avenue north to 6th Avenue ran along Ft Worth Ave which served as a commercial thoroughfare between Fort Worth and Dallas etc.. The only other business building in downtown Duncanville was the old Methodist Church which stood until 1886 when it burned down In 1881 JW Dunlap bought 100 acres northeast of present day Main Street from Colonel Mclntyre for $2 per acre In March 1890 JW Dunlap organized the first Farmers Union Association hereabouts On May 1st 1890 sawing operations began on what would become riverfront development including magazine buildings for Lumberman’s Magazine & Daily News Company In 1895 A&P Store opened across from today’s gymnasium upriver from where it stands today Duncanvilians voted not to annex Ft Worth in 1896 but annexation did take place two years later Duncanvilians approved annexation ordinance making their community one of 105 townships within Travis County created under state law following passage of House Bill No 959 on November 14th 1897 } By 1898 there were over 25 businesses operating in Downtown Duncanville including 4 banks} One grocery store operated continuously until 1957} Many breweries operated throughout Prohibition period} In 1951 Richards Drugstore closed its doors after 38 years } Today there are few remaining historic buildings apart from some privately owned properties

The town's first post office was established in 1839. In 1865, the name of the town was changed from Duncanville to Duncanville proper after John W. Tyler became the governor of Texas. In 1907, the first high school in Duncanville was built and operated for three years before it closed down due to financial difficulties. The current high school opened in 2011 and is located on Main Street in the heart of the town.
