Duncanville is a small town in the Hudspeth County School District, located in the northeast corner of Texas. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore what is now Duncanville were traders and fur traders who journeyed into the area in search of new sources of food and shelter. In 1837, Duncanville was founded by James Shields and his wife Margret on a ranch that had been donated by Judge John W. Hill. At first, Duncanville consisted only of Shields' home and barn which he used as a trading post for goods brought from Mexico City. In 1851, Duncanville became an incorporated town when it was granted a charter from the Texas State Legislature. On July 6, 1907, Duncanville lost its charter after being refused incorporation because it did not meet requirements set forth by state officials. In 1951, Dunham Cotton Mill closed due to lack of demand for cotton products in Texas; however, it left an indelible mark on Duncanvillians with its annual parade down Main Street celebrating its closure every September 25th. On January 22nd, 2009 President George W Bush visited Duncannon while touring Hurricane Ike damage along with other communities impacted by Ike during his tour nationally campaign stop across America. During his visit reporters asked him about infrastructure policy especially around hurricane recovery areas such as parts of Texas where many homes have yet to be rebuilt following hurricanes Katrina and Rita two years earlier Some residents said they were still waiting for services like water service or electric bills even though those deliveries would likely have come after recently elected Mayor Donny Ferguson’s term ended On Tuesday night Mayor Ferguson announced plans to open up all city hall hours so citizens could see their mayor more easily
