Dumas, Texas is a small town in Midland County, Texas, U.S.A., on the Gulf of Mexico about 28 miles (45 km) south-southeast of Galveston and about 25 miles (40 km) east of Houston. The population was 5,052 at the 2010 census. Dumas is located within the Tyler metropolitan area. The name "Dumas" comes from Spanish for "fortress". In 1836, General Sam Houston decided to place a Mexican garrison here as part of his campaign against Santa Anna and his TX insurgents. The fortifications were built by Major George Wright after he took over command from General Buchanan in 1835. By 1837 there were also residences for five hundred people and one arsenal with twelve cannon. In 1840, parts of Sabine Parish became part of Dallas County when it was organized from portions of Harris County following an act by the state legislature known as the Texas Annexation Act which granted voting rights to Native American tribes east of the Red River not subject to Mexican jurisdiction In 1845 Dumas had 1 local blacksmith and 3 shoemakers while its white population numbered only 178; its black residents formed their own African Methodist Episcopal church in that year In 1906 Dumas had 4 grocery stores (the last being closed in 1969), 3 banks (the last being First National Bank), 2 insurance companies, a post office and two churches: Baptist Church #1 which opened in 1907 and lasted until 1951; Presbyterian Church #2 which opened in 1911 and lasted until 1949 By 1990 Dumas's population had dwindled to just 418 with only 7 businesses still operating

Dumas, Texas is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Brazos River and is part of the Austin-Bergstrom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Dumas was John Wilkinson in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the riverbank near what is now Main Street. Wilkinson named his settlement after General Jean Charles de La Fayette, who had fought for France against Great Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1840, Wyoming resident James Kenedy founded a sawmill on the riverbank with assistance from local ranchers, who furnished him with water power to run their mills. In 1848, another pioneer, John Tatham (1815-1879), arrived in Dumas to open a general store and post office. The town was platted as a village by Wm Hogg ( 1800 - 1901 ), one of its founders; it incorporated as an independent municipality on March 4, 1851. The discovery of oil in Lamar Valley in 1947 led to heavy industry development in Dumas beginning in earnest within two years of that event. Oil production increased rapidly throughout Dumas because it offered an ideal location for extracting shale oil from Barnett shale formations lying east of Interstate 10 between Dallas and Fort Worth; these formations are much less permeable than other types of shale so that they can be processed into liquid fuels without breaking down into gas or dust). By 1973 there were over 100 businesses employing more than 1,000 workers operating out of nine industrial sites located throughout Dumas Township and parts of Johnson County: four manufacturing plants making hydraulic fracturing fluid products such as drilling muds; five petrochemicals plants producing asphalt emulsion formulations; thirteen service companies providingUnique services such as tree care/lighting/hVAC installation/repairs; nineteen transportation companies supplying goods ranging from gasoline to plumbing supplies
