Dumas is located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about twenty-six miles west of Austin. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,541. The town was founded by Frenchman François Dumas in 1849 as a mission station on an agricultural plantation. In 1875, it became the seat of Hudspeth County. The first post office in Dumas was established in 1851. The name of the town came from François Dumas's title as captain general of Louisiana and Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). When Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, Dumas became its first territorial governor. He also served as mayor of Austin from 1840 to 1845 and again from 1850 to 1855. In 1865, Dumas took part in the Battle of Pecos Creek when Texas joined Confederate States armies against President Abraham Lincoln's America while still under Mexican rule. The battle resulted in a loss for Texas and cost the lives of six soldiers and one civilian. After the war ended, Dumass moved his family to Galveston where he founded what is now known as Houston Ship Channel National Historic Site south of downtown on Buffalo Bayou between Buffalo Bayou and Sam Houston Bridge. He died there at age ninety-four years on July 20, 1896.
