Dickinson was founded in 1892 as a small town on the banks of the Trinity River. In the early days, coffee beans were brought downriver by boat and roasted in local sunrooms. Coffee beans became an important part of Dickinson's economy and culture, and the town grew rapidly around its coffee shop/market. The first grocery store opened in 1915, and by 1922 Dickinson had its own post office. In the 1940s, Dickinson began to produce its own coffee beans - a process that continued until 1985. Today, Dickinson is one of only a few towns in Texas that still grows their own coffee. The town's Coffee Shop remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, and offers daily specials including afternoon teas and breakfast sandwiches.
