Dickinson is a town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Dickinson was named for General David Dixon Dickinson, who served as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War and later became a U.S. senator from Missouri. The first settlers in what is now Dickinson were farmers and their families who came from eastern Pennsylvania in 1848. They located a log cabin on an upland that overlooked the present day town site in 1851. The first post office was established in Dickinson on July 1, 1852, by Wm Hurlbut and Drury Fenton. A store opened in 1854 and soon became one of the most important businesses in town with its own bank account and street address. In 1865, Captain John Gentry built a sawmill on the bluffs overlooking the river which still stands today as Gentry Mill Park. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living within walking distance of downtown Dickinson proper; by 1880 there were only 15 residents remaining within downtown boundaries! By 1890, however, all indications seemed to suggest that prohibition had taken hold throughout much of America and business opportunities had disappeared; so development began anew with mills being built along both banks of the Trinity River up until about 1920 when they went out of production due to competition from Automobiles! That same decade saw also construction of First Baptist Church (now Old First Presbyterian Church), which would become one of our most important civic institutions! In 1925 Dickinson lost its high school (the first such institution west of the Mississippi) when it merged into nearby Arlington High School; but through partnerships formed with Arlington High School we have been able to maintain/continue our traditions as oneOf America's top high schools!

In 1906, Dickinson voters approved annexation by Fort Worth which gave it city status. The post office was established at Dickinson on March 1, 1877, and closed on December 31, 1978.

The area that now makes up Dickinson was originally part of present-day Fayette County. Dickinson was founded by Captain James K. Dickenson and his wife, Marie, on November 5, 1836 as a trading post near what is now Lubbock. On February 9, 1840, the first school in this area opened after being built by German pioneers Dietrich and Elisabeth Sauerwerth. In 1851, East Texas Railroad reached here from Lubbock and it became a major stop for travelers between Dallas and Houston. In 1865 when West Texas Railway linked Dickens to Shermanville through this town Ira Aiken (1828-1920) started farming here with help from his brother John Aiken (1824-1900). By 1880 the town had more than 500 residents and included a cotton gin; while cereal production replaced cotton as the mainstay of business in this era many residences still remain standing today including one of Dickinson's most popular tourist attractions - John Flanders House which is also home to the museum which tells local history and features artifacts from around the region
